The key to get top rankings in search engines these days lies in understanding how search engines evaluate your links and links pointing to your site. In the eyes of search engines, the most important measure, is a link that is related to your pages; the link anchor text is related to your site and what the site says about it. The more important the page is, the more value the search engines consider the link from that page. Important pages are either linked to alot of other unimportant pages or linked to several very important pages or both. For example, if you have lots of links pointing to your page your value of your site goes up on search engine results. Keep in mind all links are not equial, links from unimportant pages have less value then links from important pages. It is important also to what the anchor text says when linking to your site. Another example is say, you have a CD site and you use the anchor text "Video games" to link back to your site. The search engine may pentalize you for using the wrong anchor text. Your challenge with links is: collect as many links as you can without tripping any spam filters and penalities that the search engine uses. Link to pages that are only related to your content on your site. Lastly, control the text of the link pointing to your site.
